I don't quite understand why you would want to not use a business rule made for your exact requirement? The carry forward business rule does not need any configuration in the rule in terms of time dimension, the account based calculations business rule does.
The carry forward business rule, if required, differentiate between data on datasources of type I and M which the account based calculcations cannot.
